The efficiency levels of a supply chain have the power to make or break businesses. Today, two of the most important competitive differentiators--price and customer experience--are governed by the way a business manages its supply chain. Imagine shipping wires, tools, and equipment to a telecom customer. The customer needs to build a new tower in a remote location. You have informed the customer that his shipment will reach in a given time. But unfortunately, things do not go according to plan and now the delivery is running almost a day late. The customer isn’t aware of this delay. Result? A domino effect! Owing to the customer’s lack of knowledge about the ETA, the entire engineering team’s man-hours for a day get squandered. The next set of engineers who were supposed to take over the task from the first team is now on its way only to wait for another day. This is how the hours keep adding up and the estimated time to make the tower up and running goes way beyond the budgeted time. And for your telecom customer, this ripple effect can result in losses adding up to millions of dollars.

Inventory management is one more aspect that gets tough to deal with in case of an inefficient supply chain. Retailers have a limited space to stack inventory, if it’s not completely filled then one is not utilizing the resources properly and if it overflows. That creates a management problem, both these cases are examples of the ripple effects of an inefficient supply chain.
